“They may take our lives, but they can’t take our freedom”, Sepoy Manoj Kumar
Singh who was part of the Ghatak Platoon, was highly motivated by this
quote. On 9 Nov 1999 enemy launched an attack on Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh’s
post in a forward area in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack was successfully
repulsed and the enemy was made to retreat. Seizing the opportunity an
operation was launched to pursue the fleeing enemy. Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh
was part of Number 1 Ghatak Team which was tasked for destination of enemy
Post. The enemy had resorted to heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire.
Heavy snowfall and poor visibility further increased the degree of
difficulty. The post, located at a height of 11200 feet, was snow bound.
Undeterred by the hostile weather and enemy fire, Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh
and his buddy charged with fury onto the enemy bunker after lobbing a
grenade and killed two enemy soldiers in a fierce hand to hand fight. This
act of bravery inspired his team members, who fell upon the enemy with
vengeance. He destroyed next bunker by pole charge and while charging into
this bunker, he was hit by a Rocket Propelled Grenade and was thrown off
into the gorge. He was later declared "Presumed dead". In the ensuing
operations, 17 enemy soldiers were killed, 14 bunkers destroyed and Arms and
assorted ammunitions were captured from the enemy post." Sepoy Manoj Kumar
Singh displayed conspicuous bravery, raw courage and supreme example of
gallantry while fighting the enemy and made the supreme sacrifice in the
best traditions of the Indian Army hence has won Vir Chakra.
